Introduction of Zhaotong
昭通简介
Zhaotong on the bank of lower Jinsha River is situated in the Northeast of Yunnan Province, sharing borders with Guizhou and Sichuan provinces. Historically, Zhaotong used to be an important pass for the Zhongyuan (or Central Plains) culture trickling to Yunnan. As a communication hub on China’s well-known “Southern Silk Road”, it has been enjoying the reputation of “Strategic Passage of Southern Yunnan and West Sichuan”. Based on diverse tourism resources, Zhaotong comprising of one district and ten counties can be divided into three main tour routes, each full of surprises and numerous attractions.

No.1 Dashanbao Black-necked Cranes National Nature Reserve（昭阳大山包黑颈鹤国家级自然保护区）（目前暂时停止对外开放）：

Dashanbao Township in Zhaoyang District has vast highland wetlands known as the kidney of the earth.
It is home to black-necked cranes, an international endangered species and first class national protected animal in China. Thanks to its unique ecological environment, Dashanbao is included in the Chinese Wetlands Action Plan for special protection. There are colorful grass, rolling hills, clear Crane Lake, magnificent rugged Cock Grand Canyon and very unique folk customs.

No.2 Niulanjiang Grand Canyon in Ludian（鲁甸牛栏江大峡谷）：
Niulanjiang River flows through Guizhou Province and enters Ludian County at a place named “Laoxiongdong (literally an old bear cave)” in Jiangdi Village of Jiangdi Township, Ludian County.It is from Laoxiongdong that Niulanjiang River meanders across Ludian from south to west and then to north, with a length of 101 kilometers. Due to its unique landscape features, Niulanjiang Grand Canyon is claimed as “the most amazing oriental canyon” by some scholars.
【译文牛栏江是一条跨越云贵两省的江流，在江底乡江底村一个名为“老熊洞”（意为古老的熊洞）的地方进入鲁甸县境，从这里开始。牛栏江蜿蜒地从鲁甸县从南流向西，又从西流向北，全长101公里。由于景观独特，牛栏江大峡谷被很多专家学者称之为“最神奇的东方峡谷”。
No.3 Ancient Giant Trees in Menggu（巧家蒙姑之树）：
Menggu Township is the southern gateway to Qiaojia County. It used to be a famous town for copper culture. Today, the ancient giant trees weathering through the passage of time stand there quietly, telling stories of the Menggu people. If they were not in Menggu, they could have been cut down by woodcutters, and have little chance to grow into towering trees?

Mysterious and spectacular underground karst caves, valleys, plunging waterfalls and other wonderful scenery tuck among hills and ditches that have a height difference of over 3,000 meters in the small village of Makou.

Huanglianhe scenic spot has 47 cascades, with the maximum drop of 147 meters. There are white elephant caves, curtain promenade, large slide and other natural wonders, as well as dove-like davidia involucrata, a rare plant species in the world.

No.6 Western grand canyon hot spring tourism area（水富县西部大峡谷温泉旅游区）:

A scenic spot in Shuifu County, the Grand Canyon is in the Jinsha River Valley, featuring green mountains, precipitous valleys and turbulent river. 2,380 meters beneath the picturesque Grand Canyon wells up an odd spring, with the water temperature of 85 degree, high water pressure and large flow rate. Over 8,000 cubic meters of water wells up every day, ranking the first in China.

The tourist attraction of Doushaguan in Yanjin County boasts the spectacular and rugged ancient post road, the Doushaguan, dazzling Laolishan mountain scenery, well-visited domes and limestone peaks, dreamlike natural maze, rare and precious herbs & flowers all over the hills, towering trees, picturesque Sangushui waterfall as well as rich ancient cultural relics. The mysterious ancient burial “Suspending coffin by Bo People” can be watched on Dongyan stone walls in opposition to Moyan.

It includes 3 main exhibition halls, i.e. Shuitianzhai Huafangzi, Zhuangzishang and Jiangxi Guild Hall (in Zhaxi Town), which were the venues where the Community Party of China held meetings of the Standing Committee of the Central Political Bureau and the enlarged meeting of the Central Political Bureau in 1935 and an auxiliary exhibition hall, i.e. Memorial of Zhaxi Meeting. It is one of 100 national classic red tourism scenic spots in China.

Its main ingredient is potato. Potatoes produced in cold highland areas in Zhaoyang District, such as Xiaolongdong and Jing'an Xikuiliangzi are boiled first, then minced and wrapped in a thin layer of rice milk and fried in the edible oil and finally taken out when it turns golden.

It is the traditional handmade food in Daguan County, with more than a hundred years of history. The Matang, produced in Daguannao, Ganhai Village, Shoushan Township, is particularly famous, featuring crispness and sweetness.

A native yummy snack in Zhaotong, which is a mixture of wanton dumplings and fine noodles. The dough is made of flour and egg and rolled to make dumpling wrappers and noodles. The dumpling wrapper is as thin as cicada's wings and the noodle is as hair.They are delicate,fresh,chewy and tebder.

The sour fish, with unique flavor and authentic prestige, can only be found in Yudong, Baishui, Qinglong, Luobu and other villages of Weixin County where the Luobu River flows through. Water is a sustainer of all life and nurtures all beings. The remote Luobu River meanders through the hills where Yunnan and Guizhou adjoin. Although the Chinese saying says that there will be no fish when the water is so clear, it is not the case of Luobu River, which has crystal-clear water and carp can be found swimming leisurely in the river.

Also known as “Houshan Pear”, it is a representative of Zhaotong pear varieties. It is mainly produced in Xiaozhai and other towns. It features bright yellow color, big size, sweetness and crispness and juiciness. It sells well in Yunnan, Sichuan, etc.

It is a specialty of Daguan County, and also the traditional cake of the Man ethnic group. It features neat shape, light yellow color, fragrant taste, softness and non-glutinous property.
